Developement Through Education

Bharatratna Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Ashram School
The members of the organisation have gained education in Residential Schools and made capable to carve a honourable place in the society. Tribal Residential Schools had all the facilities provided by the Government, yet desired performance had not been achieved.

The organisation accepted the challenge and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Ashram School was started in the hutment of our President in the year 1991 with 30 students. Today, more than 500 students are benefiting from the school upto S.S.C. level and the passing percentage for last year was more than 75%.

We consistently encourage all the students, especially girl child to participate in all competitive tests, as well as sports. The students fairly perform in all the activities with some winning state level competitions also. The school is situated on a 5 acre plot with all the necessary facilities. Medical camps, Seminars on gender equality, Andhashraddha Nirmulan are conducted regularly.

Also we plan to start computer training, vocational training courses to enable the students to become all round winners in today’s technological era.

The ‘Katkari’ community from Thane district is among the Primitive Tribe Group enlisted by the Government. They are least developed sections from tribal population whose literacy rate is less than 2% as compared to 65% national average. As Thane district is our target area, we took the challenging initiative by starting Educational Complex by educating girls on priority basis in 1999.As we are confident that only girl/women education can reform a society in the true sense.

We faced the unwilling parents with wisdom by devising incentives for allowing their girls to get admitted in the school and were successful in convincing them. Though difficulties like lack of water supply, forced us to relocate the school at a village called Changyachapada as a river water source is available there in the year 2003-2004.

The school was started with 30 girls and now has a strength of more than 100 girls in Std 1st to Std 8th. The organisation has to continuously take painful efforts to sustain the school due to untimely grants by Government. Despite all this, when Honourable Tribal Minister Shri. Madhukarrao Pichad visited, he appreciated our efforts as we are the ‘first’ in Thane district to run such activity.

Today the girls who have passed out from our schools are studying in colleges and are playing an important part in main streaming their society in the developed fortunates.

Inspite of all the progressive steps taken by Government to reform education, the condition of other backward classes, especially girl children is still pitiable Such a case was observed in Dhamangaon situated 8 k.m. from Bhiwandi Taluka. The place is sensitive and prone to communal riots and hence parents are unwilling to send their girls to school.

Taking this in consideration, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vidyalaya,Dhamangaon has been started since 2001 to provide secondary education the needy children. A drastic increase in girls admission to school has been observed with a consistent passing percentage of more than 90%.

The school has been given the status of permanent unaided school according to revised policy of Government and hence we have to run it with the help of donations.

Women & Child Development

While running Family Counselling centre we learnt that dejected women are sometimes left alone to fetch for themselves. These depressed women either find solace by committing suicide, go astray or become victims of human trafficking. Hence they need a temporary shelter till they become independent. The organisation started Short-Stay-Home for such women in 1990.

At critical stage counselling is done, along with rehabilitation of victims. Medical care and psychological intervention if required is given to the women. To make them self reliant, education cum vocational training is provided. Residential facilities are provided to fight their loneliness, depression and support them morally. Also legal guidance is provided if need arises.

Family Counselling Center Research has proven that problems of women have become increasingly complex as more and more educated & independent women face the brunt of vices like domestic violence, whereas condition of rural and uneducated women is far worse off, who face the social stigmas like dowry, physical abuse etc,.

We realized that along with providing justice to those affected, counselling of Women prone to discrimination is the need of the hour. Hence a Family Counseling Centre was established in the year 1989.

The unit was set up with two experts who have a masters degree in social work & one legal Advisor A Sub-Committee is set up with community social workers, Police officer who meet frequently to accept the complaint and solve it by counselling, also wherever necessary police help & legal action is taken.

Health

The Tribal population residing in remote areas have a general fear of modernization due to lack of education and extremely poor financial status. They do not approach the Primary Health Centres, even if they are accessible and prefer ‘Dhongi Babas’ and black magic instead.

We then devised the concept of ‘Doctor goes to Patient instead of Patient goes to Doctor’ to solve the problem. Henceforth Dr. Ambedkar Mobile Dispensary Unit was started in 2001. It works in the remote areas of Thane district namely Jawhar, Mokhada, etc.

The unit regularly organizes medical camps, supporting treatment is provided for promoting maternal and child health, awareness camps for prevention of communicable diseases are conducted. Health is an asset and is utmost important for an individual to function to his fullest potential. The organisation is hence striving for the wellbeing of the unattended disadvantaged section of society.

Microfinance

The Co-operative movement has time and again proved its power to reduce the disparity between ‘haves and have nots’. Though, the awareness and practice of the movements has reached its height in India, the Dalit community continues to receive a setback and has remained aloof from this sphere.

The Government gives incentives to disadvantaged sections for starting cooperatives, yet those efforts have failed. The organisation hence started Lok Abhiyan Co-operative Credit Society in the year 2006 to involve these deprived people in the co-operative movement.

The scope of the activity is very broad with district jurisdiction and has over 4000 members. It has a turnover of about 40 lacs and expanded to two branches in 4 years. We wish to help youth and women on priority basis for their entrepreneurial endeavor and are succeeding.

Information Technology

The greatest challenge faced by India in the 21st century is the ‘Digital Divide’ as put forth in the eleventh five year plan. While Information technology is the latest paradigm in human development; our organization took a step forward to remove this digital divide way back in 1994. ABM Computer Center was established to educate deprived sections especially SC/ST free of cost. The need for the same institute was felt as the disadvantaged could not afford to pay the huge fees associated with IT courses and developed a fear about it.

Today the institution has a wide spectrum of career oriented courses like MS-CIT, Hardware Networking Diploma, Masters Diploma in software programming as well as provides IT Solutions also, Website development, software development and similar services are provided to the needy. The organization has proved itself as technology savvy and aims to empower the disadvantaged by using technology as a tool.

Youth Empowerment

The demographic dividend i.e. more than half of the Indian population is below 25 years of age can prove as a profitable asset if utilized property. But unemployment especially educated unemployment is the main obstacle in development.

Hence we started Sankalp Educated Unemployed Service Cooperative Society Ltd in the year 2005. More than 150 members are registered with the society and are working in different area e.g. Electricity Distribution Company, State transport, etc, Also, the organisation aims to promote entrepreneurship development among all educated youth and give them necessary assistance.

ABM Competitive Exam Training Center

Competitive Exams have become omnipresent , as right from securing admission in a good school to getting a professional degree, and further acquiring job requires one to ‘qualify ’ in a test. We felt that the disadvantaged students suffer a lot in this process as the high amount of fees for top classes could not be paid by them. Hence ABM started a private batch with the help of our instructors Mr.Sumit Nigam and Ms.Kanchan Sutar taking minimal fees from the students to give them reliable coaching . Our first batch had 10 students out of which 7 got qualified in IBPS Exam. We got a special sanction by Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar Research & Training Institute Pune, under the aegis of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of Maharashtra for a Thane District Rural Area students in the year 2012-2013,where we gave free coaching to about 150 students along with a stipend of Rs.3000/month.
